 Abbaye de Cîteaux

It was probably on 20 March 1098 or thereabouts that Robert de Molesmes, fired by the desire to observe the letter as well as the spirit of the ancient Rule of St Benedict, was given some land in the forest of Cîteaux by his cousin, the Viscount of Beaune. The property was at that time a little village with a church known since time immemorial as Cistercium, the present-day La Forgeotte.
In 1100, the monastery was moved to its present position, perhaps due to a dearth of water. Under the impetus of Bernard de Fontaine, this was to prove the start of the glorious destiny of Cîteaux Abbey.
At the French Revolution, the abbey was sold as public property and then, in 1846, became a large remand home for juvenile delinquents. It was only in 1898 that the Cistercian monks at last returned to the premises. During the two World Wars, Cîteaux was for a time transformed into a military hospital.
